July’s birthstone is the mystical pink to blood-red colored gemstone known as the Ruby. Curious to know more? Read on to learn some fascinating facts about July’s birthstone.
The word ‘Ruby’ comes from the Latin word 'ruber', which means ‘red’. While it’s true that most rubies are a dark red, they can also be various shades of pink and purple. The red actually comes from the amount of chromium in the stone; the more the chromium, the deeper and darker the red of the ruby, and the more valuable it is. The most valuable ones are “pigeon-blood” rubies that have an intense, blood-like hue with blue undertones.
Rubies, like many other precious gems, are formed through intense heat and pressure under the surface of the earth, and take around 20 to 30 million years to form. Rubies are from the corundum family of gems which are renowned for their rarity and hardness—second only to diamonds—and includes sapphires and emeralds. They are a crystalline variation of the mineral aluminium oxide. In the present day, rubies are typically mined in Madagascar, Nepal, Thailand and Australia.
Historically, the ruby has been symbolic in many cultures. In some, it represented peace, harmony, and power, while in other cultures, rubies were a sign of good health, wealth, wisdom, and a happy love life. In the modern age, rubies are strongly associated with vitality, energy and physical strength. Their red is seen as the colour of love and passion.
Rubies have been mentioned in literature and illustrations as far back as the 6th century BCE. The bible, for example, refers to the ruby as one of the stones embedded into the breastplate of the high priest, establishing it in religious lore.
Known as the king of gems, the ruby was also believed to protect its wearer from evil spirits and misfortune, lending it a supernatural element that fantasy and fiction still draws from today.
Though the ruby has carried many different meanings throughout history, it is now generally associated with love, passion, and bravery. Gem enthusiasts still believe that July's birthstone bestows good fortune to its wearer and continue to associate the stone with love and passion.
In terms of jewellery, the ruby is one of the most popular gems along with diamonds, sapphires and emeralds, and is the traditional stone to gift for the 40th wedding anniversary milestone. Rubies are usually preferred in white or yellow gold and in a round or oval cut since these accentuate the deep red colour.
